Powder!

As some of you might know, I’m a fanatic skier.  I ski for more than 15 years now, and am becoming more fanatic every year.

This year there are lots of “Powder alerts” in Europe. The best part of skiing is freeriding: make your own lines (”freshies”) in white powder. But this year the risk of avalanches is quite big. So I need to buy some gear: beacon, shovel and probe.

The only difficult point is how much money you need to invest. For example, a good beacon with 3 antennas costs about 350 euro, while a version with 1 antenna is less than 150 euro. Both beacons will do the job, but the difference is in the search mode: with 1 antenna you need to practice a lot, while a version with 3 antennas is much easier to use. And this will save minutes, and maybe even lives!

@bas.. My advise; buy a 3 antenna beacon. Read the safety pages (page 242-252) in the wePowder book and you know why. They are way faster…

Thanks Maurice. We (me and my brother in law) already ordered the Pieps DSP. Thanks to some advices on snowzone.nl and after reading several tests, this seemed to be the best value for money. Now let’s hope I never have to use the receive mode in the mountains… :-)
